Wig fungus - Lion's Mane - Grow Kit Manual
-
Introduction:
The Lion's Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) is a delicious and healthy mushroom with a unique taste and texture. This manual will help you successfully grow Lion's Mane mushrooms with our grow kit.
-
Contents of the grow kit:
The grow kit contains a fully grown substrate consisting of Master's Mix, a combination of soy hulls and hardwood. The mycelium of the Lion's Mane fungus is already present in the substrate, so you can start growing mushrooms right away.
-
Supplies:
In addition to the grow kit, you need a plant sprayer, a damp cloth, and possibly a bag with holes to maintain the humidity level. It is recommended to spray daily, although this is not strictly necessary.
-
Preparation:
Remove the grow kit from the box. The mycelium of the Lion's Mane fungus often needs a few days to recover from the journey. Fold the bag back up as shown in the picture below:
In this way, the mycelium can breathe again and complete the last bit of colonization.
As soon as you see small white balls forming on the substrate (mini Lion's Mane fungi) it is time to make the cuts. Then fold the grow kit again as you received it. You can use the supplied elastic for this. Place the grow kit on a clean surface, preferably on a damp cloth on a plate. Make sure that the environment in which you place the grow kit is free of drafts. If necessary, place the bag with holes over the grow kit to create a humid environment. To increase the humidity, you can spray the inside of the bag with water.
Make two cuts of about 5 cm in the block, preferably on either side of the label and then diagonally upwards. You can also choose to lay the block on its side and make the cuts at the top. This way the Lion's Mane fungi will grow on the top of the log instead of on the side.
-
Care and maintenance:
The Lion's Mane needs high humidity and sufficient oxygen to grow well. Ideally, the humidity should be around 70-80%, but our strain was selected to grow well even in lower humidity. Keep the temperature between 18-24°C for optimal growth.
-
Harvest:
The right time to harvest the Lion's Mane fungi is when the spores have not yet been released. This is usually when the mushroom's "mane," or tooth-like structures, have reached their maximum length and before they begin to discolor or shrivel. The fungus then still has a bright white color. You can gently pull the Wig Fungus from the substrate. Try to leave as little residue as possible on the substrate. You can expect two harvests from this grow kit, the first being the largest. With luck there may be a small third harvest, but by then the grow kit will be almost completely exhausted. In between harvests, provide enough humidity to encourage a second growth.
-
Store:
Store the harvested Lion's Mane mushrooms in a paper bag in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for about a week, but check them regularly for signs of spoilage such as discoloration or an unpleasant odor.
