Coming soon: logs near you
We are building a finder for fresh logs from tree surgeons and sawmills near you. It will appear here once it is ready.

Inoculate and wait
Drill, tap in the plugs and seal with wax. The first harvest comes after six months to a year.
What makes a good log?
- Hardwood: oak, beech, hornbeam or sweet chestnut for shiitake; poplar, willow, ash, birch or beech for oyster mushroom; alder, maple or elder for wood ear. No softwood.
- About 10 to 25 cm thick, in pieces of 30 to 50 cm, so you can still lift it.
- Freshly felled, preferably in winter or early spring, and no more than about three months ago.
- Bark as intact as possible, no cracks along the full length, no rotten wood.
- Let a fresh log rest for two to three weeks before inoculating, so the tree's own defences have faded.
Tree surgeon, gardener or sawmill?
Do you sometimes have log sections left over that would otherwise go into the chipper? A listing on this page is free. You decide what customers see and whether you track your stock.
