Wooden plugs colonised with shiitake mycelium (Lentinula edodes), all round strain, for inoculating fresh logs.

Oak is the classic host; beech and birch work too. Drill holes of 8 to 10 mm, tap the plugs in and seal them with wax. The all round strain is less fussy than a pronounced summer or winter strain and fruits over a wide temperature range. Expect six months to a year of colonising before the first shiitake appear.
